What is adjustable length settings?

Adjustable length settings is nothing but a series of lengths you get in a trimmer that are easily changeable. Length settings contain trimming lengths that you use to cut your beard or hair. One length setting only contain one length. So, if a trimmer has 20 length settings, means, the trimmer has 20 lengths, which directly tells you that you make your beard stylish by 20 ways. Adjustable length settings are mostly given by two ways as follows.

  1. Lengths with fixed precision
  2. Lengths with dynamic precision

Lengths with fixed precision

In this case, the trimmer contains trimming-lengths that raise each time by a fixed value. Let’s understand this with an example. If Phillips trimmer comes with 20 length settings with 0.5mm precision, then it means the lowest length you get is 1mm and highest is 10mm. In between 1 to 10mm, you can change the lengths by 0.5mm precision. So, if you change it, you will end up with trimming length like 1mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 3.5mm, 4.0mm, and so on till 10mm. Here, as you have noticed that each time you change the length, the length is changed by a fixed value – 0.5mm. Next, look at the lengths with dynamic precision.

Lengths with dynamic precision

In this case, the trimmer contains trimming-lengths that raise each time by dynamic value. In other words, the lengths are also fixed but the number of lengths are higher. Let’s understand this with an example. Consider a Groomiist trimmer comes with 6 length settings, and the lengths assigned to each setting are 1mm, 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, and 16mm. Here, in this Groomiist trimmer, you can adjust the lengths between 1mm and 16mm, but you can’t adjust it linearly like 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm or 1mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, and so on like in the case of lengths with fixed precision.

How adjustable length settings are implemented on the trimmer?

The adjustable length settings are implemented by four ways on the trimmer or hair clipper. Those 4 ways are as follows.

  1. Integrating a horizontally rotating dial on trimmer
  2. Integrating a vertically rotating dial on trimmer
  3. By using a sliding comb on trimmer
  4. Integrating a horizontally rotating dial on the guide comb

1. Integrating a horizontally rotating dial on trimmer

In this case, the rotating dial which contains all length settings, fitted on the trimmer. And, that dial is so easy to rotate using finger to set the desired length setting before lock-in. See the following image to get an idea of how this thing looks like.

The trimmer in the above image is Mi’s trimmer. You can see there is dial which you can rotates horizontally using your fingers. There are 1 to 10 numbers with after each one. So, total of 20 length settings. But, as it comes with two guide combs, you can take leverage up to 40 settings. The first comb is for up to 10mm length with 0.5mm precision and the second one is for up to 20mm with 0.5mm precision where starting length is 11mm. In short, in this case, you will get a length settings with fixed precision.

2. Integrating a vertically rotating dial on trimmer

The above image contains Phillips BT3211/15 beard trimmer (review). You can see the dial is not placed like Mi trimmer. In Mi’s trimmer, you need to move your finger up and down to rotate whereas in this case, you need to move from left and to right. The position is placed such a way that it rotates only vertically. However, both horizontal and vertical rotation gives pretty accurate length setting. A little con of having horizontally rotating dial is that it may break if a trimmer hits the floor. But, in vertical position, the chances are pretty less. At last, in this case, like horizontal position, you will get length settings with fixed precision.

3. Adjustable length settings’ integration on the sliding comb

In this case, no dial will be there on trimmer. It won’t also be on the guiding comb. Here, only a mark will be there on either sides of a trimmer to guide you regarding the length settings when the guide comb is attached on the device. Understand it better by seeing the following image.

Adjustable length settings are placed marked on the comb and the guiding-mark is on the trimmer to help you set the desired length.

The trimmer is in the above image is Braun MGK3221 all-in-one trimmer (read the full review). You can see guiding-mark is drawn on the right side of the device and lengths are written on the comb. All you have to do is slide the comb to set the desired length. Here, you won’t get lengths with fixed precision. You can see the length in our example starting from 13mm. Actually, its in the Braun’s trimmer only, where you get the lengths with fixed precision. But, most of other manufacturers like Panasonic, Groomiist, and many more don’t follow the fixed precision. Next, look at the final case where rotating dial is integrated on the guiding comb.

4. Integration of rotating dial on the guiding comb

In this case, the adjustable length settings are integrated on the rotating dial which ultimately placed on the comb. This way, your trimmer won’t become complex. But, you may lose the guiding comb while travelling. See the below image to understand well how this mechanism looks like.

The above image is the guiding comb of Syska HT3333K trimmer. It contains length settings up to 20 with fixed precision. The rotating dial is horizontally integrated on the comb. So, to change the lengths, you have to rotate it left to right. This kinda mechanism is pretty similar to the first type we have shown. In this case, you will get lengths with fixed precision.

How adjustable length settings can help you to make your beard or hair stylish?

You have to make your hair or beard stylish. The adjustable length settings are only going to help you in setting the beard or hair length. You may need a long beard of 6mm or 9mm, or may need a stubble cut of 1 or 2mm, sometimes 3mm. So, it will just gives you length. The rest of the work, you have to do by your own.
